BSC receives Community Foundation grant to expand programming for first-gen students

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern has received a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham to expand programming for first-generation college students.

“Expanding access to a liberal arts education for a wider range of students is a top priority for Birmingham-Southern, and we appreciate the Community Foundation’s support as we work toward this goal,” said BSC President Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith.

The grant supports the hiring of a first-year advising coordinator focused on supporting students and families who may be in an at-risk group in successfully navigating the challenges of college—including assessing and delivering resources needed to increase the likelihood of a successful matriculation.

“Studies show that the majority of students who drop out of college will do so within their first year,” said Dr. David Eberhardt, BSC’s vice president of student development. “The addition of this staff position this fall will be crucial to providing students with the support and resources they need to be successful in their first year of college and beyond.”

The grants was one of several focused on the Community Foundation’s efforts to improve career and college readiness; BSC was the only college or university included. Additional grant details are available at www.cfbham.org/for-nonprofits/recent-grants.
